Search For Childcare Leads To Learning Opportunities
Two years ago, Drucilla Dublin desperately needed to find a reliable option for childcare. She found that, and much more, with the dedicated professionals of Edgefield-McCormick County Adult Education and Family Literacy at the Johnston Learning Center (JLC).
She’s now earned an associate’s degree with academic commendations from Piedmont Technical College, developed an unshakeable confidence, and found a pathway to an even better life than she ever dreamed possible.
“I initially came here as a parent seeking childcare services, not realizing the comprehensive educational opportunities that awaited my family and me,” Dublin said Thursday, September 18 during JLC’s annual celebratory luncheon for National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. “During my time here, I have participated in multiple programs including the Family Literacy Program, First Steps Program, and their childcare services. Through these experiences, I have acquired invaluable parenting techniques and strategies, gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of reading at every developmental stage, and learned essential self-care practices that have helped me navigate the various phases of my child’s growth. Additionally, I received practical financial guidance in money management, saving, and investment strategies.”
The center’s high-quality support and educational and career resources helped Dublin complete her WorkKeys certification on-site while receiving reliable childcare. That foundation allowed her to pursue higher education at Piedmont Technical College, where she was named to both the Merit List and President’s List for academic excellence. She earned certifications in Human Resources and Entrepreneurship, as well as an Associate in Applied Science degree with a major in Business Administration and Management Concentration.
Her new goal? A four-year degree in business administration from the University of South Carolina.
“The Johnston Learning Center has been instrumental in my achievements,” she continued. “The center offers diverse pathways for personal and professional growth, including assistance with WorkKeys, GED preparation, CDL training, CNA certification, and numerous trade programs. I am deeply grateful to the exceptional faculty and staff at Johnston Learning Center for their unwavering support in helping both my child and me achieve significant milestones in our educational and personal development.”
According to the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL), National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week serves to raise public awareness of the need for and value of adult education and family literacy, with a goal to increase financial and societal support for access to foundational education programs for U.S. adults with low literacy, numeracy, and digital skills.
